Gynecology – Information

A simple 5-minute test can help you take control of your breast health.

The Halo Breast Pap test gives doctors and patients a new method to monitor breast cancer risk, quickly and easily. All women are at risk for developing breast cancer. Unfortunately, by the time a woman can actually feel the lump, the disease is no longer in its earliest, most treatable stage.

Like the cervical Pap test, HALO can detect abnormal cells years before a larger, potentially cancerous lesion might develop. This simple, noninvasive 5-minute test is the key to better outcomes through early detection.

This simple 5-minute painless procedure is done in the office.

Vaccine for Hepatitis

TWINRIX is a vaccine for adults 18 years of age or older. It is used to help protect against hepatitis A and hepatitis B infections, which can affect the liver. Our office offers this vaccine and others in an effort to keep you healthy.

You may be surprised to learn that a person can have hepatitis A or hepatitis B without looking sick, feeling sick or having any symptoms at all.

Infected people do not always exhibit symptoms of Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B, but they can spread the viruses to others without even knowing that they are infected.

Although it may sound strange, people can become infected with hepatitis A virus or hepatitis B virus without having signs (things you might see) and symptoms (things you may feel) of an illness. Symptoms usually begin many days to weeks after the initial infection occurs.

In fact, many people who contract hepatitis A or hepatitis B don’t know how they were exposed. Thousands of cases of acute hepatitis A and hepatitis B were reported to the CDC in 2007. In more than half of those cases, patients did not identify how they got hepatitis A or hepatitis B.

Gardisil vaccine

The future will be here before you know it. And chances are you’ve already started planning it. If those plans don’t include cervical cancer or genital warts, you should know how GARDASIL can help protect against diseases caused by human papillomavirus (HPV).

What is GARDASIL? GARDASIL is the HPV vaccine that helps protect against 4 types of HPV. In girls and young women ages 9 to 26, GARDASIL helps protect against 2 types of HPV that cause about 75% of cervical cancer cases, and 2 more types that cause 90% of genital warts cases. In boys and young men ages 9 to 26, GARDASIL helps protect against 90% of genital warts cases.

GARDASIL also helps protect girls and young women ages 9 to 26 against 70% of vaginal cancer cases and up to 50% of vulvar cancer cases.

Cervarix vaccine

Every year, about 11,000 women get cervical cancer in the United States. Young women in their 20s are at their highest risk of abnormal cervical changes that may lead to cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is caused by a virus called human papillomavirus (HPV), which is transmitted through sexual contact or intercourse. Most HPV infections can clear by themselves, but if you are infected by a cancer-causing HPV type that doesn’t go away, it may develop into cancer.

CERVARIX helps to protect against the 2 HPV types that cause most cervical cancer (HPV 16 and 18 cause 75% of cervical cancer cases). CERVARIX is a vaccine for girls or young women between the ages of 10 and 25.

CERVARIX does not prevent disease due to all HPV types and is not a treatment for cervical cancer. It is important to get routine cervical cancer screening, such as a Pap test, and to talk to your healthcare provider about lifestyle changes.

Birth Control Pills

The Pill is the most popular type of birth control. There are many different brands and they come in packs of 21 or 28 pills. One pill is taken every day. The first 21-24 pills have a combination of synthetic estrogen and progesterone hormones. The Pill stops ovulation, preventing the ovaries from releasing eggs. The Pill also thickens cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to enter the uterus. The hormones in the Pill prevent fertilization. The last 4-7 pills of a 28-day pack have no hormones and are called spacer pills. The Pill is 92-99.7% effective as birth control. It does not protect against reproductive tract infections, including HIV/AIDs.
