MonaLisa Touch® Q&A

What is the MonaLisa Touch®?

The MonaLisa Touch® is a medical device that uses laser energy to revitalize the tissues of the vaginal canal in women who have vaginal atrophy, a condition that causes issues like vaginal dryness, pain, burning, itching and an increased risk of infections. Because it uses laser energy to restore the tissue lining the vaginal canal, women treated with the MonaLisa Touch® usually can avoid using hormone replacement therapy to treat their symptoms. Plus, the MonaLisa Touch® treatment can be performed in the office, and there is no downtime.

Why does vaginal atrophy occur?

Vaginal atrophy occurs when a woman's natural levels of estrogen and progesterone begin to decline, especially during the time before and during menopause. Sometimes, vaginal atrophy can develop during breastfeeding or in response to other issues that affect the normal production of hormones. In vaginal atrophy, the tissues lining the vaginal wall become thin and dry, often becoming sore and inflamed. Women who have vaginal atrophy often experience pain during intercourse, and as the condition progresses, they can experience painful symptoms at other times as well. The risk of urinary tract infections also tends to increase as a result of the condition.

How does the MonaLisa Touch® work?

The MonaLisa Touch® uses a special laser system designed to treat the very sensitive tissue of the vaginal wall and the surrounding area. During treatment, the laser is fired multiple times to create controlled areas of damage that stimulate the body's natural healing responses. New collagen forms that help restore the thickness and resilience of the vaginal lining while also promoting better lubrication. Collagen formation typically begins very soon after treatment, and the effects can persist for many weeks as new tissues are “built” and the area is restored.

How many treatments will I need?

While a single treatment with the MonaLisa Touch® system can provide some benefit, most women achieve the greatest benefits from having a series of three treatments spaced a few weeks apart. Anesthesia is not required, and women can resume their regular routines right after treatment.
